This outing has been postponed indefinitely due to the lack of flowers, due the the drier weather this year the experts are not sure there will be many Lotus Pinnatus bloom but if this changes you will be notified. 

Spring Flowers 

The soil at Harewood Plains is thin and overlays an impermeable layer of rock. Rainwater saturates the soil and moss, creating a unique ecosystem with shallow runnels of seepage running through rich wildflower meadows. However, this same conditions make the meadows vulnerable to human activity. To minimise impact, visitors should keep to the main roads and trails as much as possible. 

We will visit the section of the plains accessible off Harewood Mines Rd. which may be accessed of Nanaimo Lakes Rd. and is an unmarked paved road at the foot of the overpass. It is a fifteen minute walk along that road and series of trails into the “plains”. Along the way, you will come to a junction of three paths but stick to the middle one. 

Pinnatus Park is named after Nanaimo’s floral emblem, the rare lotus pinnatus flower. 

Difficulty Level: Medium – Difficult – will require some walking 

Suggested Equipment: 

A wide angle and/or a macro or close up lens. A tripod will be useful but tread lightly with little or no impact on the environment.

For those of you who are early risers you can greet the dawn at 6:30AM but organised outing will start at 8:30AM.
