Club Outing – Piper’s Lagoon Park – RSVP Required

January 25 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Join Irene on Saturday, January 25 at 11AM for a stroll around Piper’s Lagoon. The Nanaimo Parks and Recs site has has the filling to say about this great spot:

“Pipers Lagoon Park features scenic trails with ocean viewpoints making it a perfect place to enjoy sunrises. Built on an isthmus that expands out to a rocky headland, this 8 hectare parks features twisting trails that lead to a number of seaside lookouts. From the headland you’ll have a great view of Shack Island and the southern point of Neck Point Park.

Pipers Lagoon is an ideal bird watching retreat. Gulls, sandpipers, horned grebes, loons, kingfishers, oystercatchers and great blue herons are just some varieties of bird life.”

It will be high tide so to get to the headlands and enjoy the full park you will be required to climb over the rocks. Once over the rocks the trails can be slippery with a slight elevation gain so good walking shoes will be required. It is winter so warm clothes will be required, along with gloves and toques, hand warmers would come in handy.

Irene focus will be on landscapes – hoping for some nice views of the snow-covered mountains across the straight. But there are possibilities of spotting a variety of wildlife. A tripod is recommended for those who feel comfortable to carry one, and lenses for both landscapes and wildlife, a telephoto if you have one.

If you are not up to the climb over the rocks there is the opportunity of getting some great seascapes and beach photographs without doing so.

Pipers Lagoon is located at 3600 Place Rd, off Hammond Bay Rd. There should be lots of parking at this time of the year.

We will meet by the Parking Lot just prior to 11:00 AM. Please RSVP with the on-line form to ensure you are advised of any changes.
