Learn black & white photography with Chuck Kimmerle—from capture and editing to powerful visual storytelling.
Distinctive Black & White is an engaging presentation by acclaimed photographer Chuck Kimmerle, focused on the art and craft of creating compelling monochrome images.
Chuck will walk through his complete creative and technical workflow, from field considerations to final edit. Topics include black & white conversion, profiles, tonal control using curves and sliders, masking techniques, unblocking shadows, and the thoughtful use of presence tools.
He will also share insights from his award-winning long-term project at Manzanar National Historic Site, and how it transformed his approach to landscape photography.
With a career spanning more than three decades—including work as a photojournalist, editor, and fine art photographer—Chuck brings both technical depth and artistic vision to his teaching.
About Chuck Kimmerle:
Chuck is a creative landscape photographer working exclusively in black and white. The landscape moniker, while relatable, evokes unfair and incorrect expectations of mountain panoramas and sunsets. Neither occupy much space in Chuck’s collection, his photographs are stark, simple, quiet, personal and often contain artificial objects. They are unique.
