BC / Yukon Speaker Series presents Black and White Photography with Elizabeth Gray
January 12, 2024 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
BC / Yukon Inter-club Speaker Series and the Victoria Camera Club present Black and White Photograph – Shooting with Intent with Elizebeth Gray
Elizabeth Gray: American nature photographer Rob Sheppard said, “Good black and white photography is not about the removal of colour!” I could not agree more. Unfortunately, many photographers try unsuccessfully to rescue mediocre images by converting them to black and white.
In this presentation, we will discuss ways to recognise what subjects and scenes work well when shot in black and white and why you would deliberately choose to shoot in black and white over colour. We will talk about what makes strong monochrome photos and how to train your brain to see in black and white. With these skills, you will be able to create much stronger and compelling monochrome photographs.
Elizabeth is a Vancouver photographer and educator with over 40 years experience. Her photography covers a broad range of subjects including landscape, wildlife, architectural and urban images. Her latest project is focusing on street photograph and all the challenges in presents.
Artist Statement: My camera and lens allows me to document the way I see things, things that other people often miss. So often we walk by the ordinary without taking the time to enjoy and explore. I hope my photography allows the viewer to ponder the beauty in our everyday environment, both in nature and in our man-made surroundings.
